Death Note, Vol. 1 (Death Note)
By Tsugumi Ohba
see related

Death Note definitely has a goth feel to it, but I think it appeals to a mainstream audience.  I don't know if I'd personally like to have the power to kill at will, but it'll be interesting to see where the author goes with this one.  I'm already hooked and it's only volume 1.

Boy2Girl
By Terence Blacker

Boy2Girl is another deceiving title.  I thought this would be about a teen dealing with transgender issues.  However it's not as complicated as that, or maybe it is.  You have to decide.  Here's the basic plot.  Matthew's cousin Sam comes to live in England when his mother dies in a car crash.  Sam's a rough kid who alienates his cousin and his new friends by beating one of them up.  To get back in their good graces, Sam must prove himself to the gang.  Guess how he does that...he takes on the challenge of dressing like a girl and infiltrating the female psyche at their middle school.  What will happen when Sam reveals his true self?  To find out read Boy2Girl by Terence Blacker.

Flavor Of The Week

I thought Flavor of the Week would be a racey book about a guy dating a different girl every week.  But it's simpler and sweeter than that.  What do you get when you cross Cyrano de Bergerac with Emeril Lagasse?  You get Cyril, the protagonist of this story, a slighty overweight kid who loves to cook.  Cyril has a secret crush on his friend Rose but is too self-concious and shy to take action.  He ends up playing the part of Cyrano when he cooks sumptuous dinners for his best friend Nick who is trying to woo Rose via her stomach and tastebuds.   To find out who gets the girl in the end,  read  Flavor of the Week by Tucker Shaw.

Read this if you liked Sloppy Firsts.  Good follow up and I can't wait for the 3rd book.

Blue Is For Nightmares
By Laurie Faria Stolarz

Blue is for Nightmares is a horror/mystery that has a blend of witchcraft.  A seemingly good premise with an unknown stalker who's after the protagonist's roommate.  However the story gets a bit dragged out and the writing style couldn't sustain the story.  In all honesty I got half way through and decided to skip the second half and read the last chapter to find out the ending.  Not a literary gem but seems to be a popular title with the teens.
